SANDBLASTING
Sandblasting float glass with a combination of high pressure sand and air creates a frosted glass panel which is permanent. Toughened and laminated glass can only have surface sandblasting, not deep bite sandblasting.
Many designs can be done both as a negative (clear design on a frosted background) or as a positive (frosted design on a clear background).
‘Shading’ is used for delicate imagery and with shading the blasted objects are given a more solid look and more toning detail.
‘Deep Bite’, also known as glass carving is used to create three dimensional imagery. By etching deeper into the glass, a hollow is formed which on the face side causes the image to be projected outwards and enhances the detail.
Refer Section 3.5 for more information on Sandblasting.

10.9 ACID ETCHING
Acid etched glass is a durable finish created when a glass surface has been etched with hydrofluoric acid to create a fine translucent frosted or patterned finish. It was originally popular around the turn of the century, but the design range now extends from traditional Victorian styles to modern examples. The product is suitable for authentic villa restorations and for new homes and is suitable for interior and exterior use.
There are several different finishes available in acid etched glass, some of which can be combined to give extra effects for privacy and decoration.
White Acid Finish
This is the most commonly used etched glass where the design surface is frosted. Many designs can be done both as a negative (clear design on a frosted background) or as a positive (frosted design on a clear background). Plain frosting or etching all over is also popular.
French Embossed
This is where the glass has been double etched for privacy, which makes it very suitable for bathrooms. The background is frosted and the design is an embossed raised pattern. Refer Metro GlassTech for more options.
Semi Clear Etch
This process has the design embossed and raised but the background is semi clear and the design is totally clear.

ETCHLITE
Metro GlassTech offer a finished acid etched product called Etchlite. This is available in stock sheet form and can be cut to size, toughened or CIP laminated as required.
